For starters, try and have a planned approach to your interview process, and we would definitely recommend an informal telephone interview initially – this 15 minute conversation could save you an hour!
If you have 5 vetted applications that meet your criteria of person, your next step would be to tell them a little about the company, job role and ask them a couple of technical questions. The technical questions could be based on their knowledge or experience aligning to the most important requirements of the job role, potentially where they would spend most of their time.

Converting vetted applicants to qualified applicants will save time and money. Time is more productive; time is not wasted. Keeping the telephone interview relaxed, but asking the same questions with each, will allow you to compare more accurately.
Here are some further ways to ensure you don’t waste time and you hire the right person first time.
- It’s key not to oversell the job. Be honest, clear and transparent in your expectations.
- If you spot gaps in their CV… Ask why?
- Having someone on board that fits culturally in terms of personality and attitude is more important, do remember skills can be trained!
- At the face to face interview, give the candidate an example of the job role in action i.e how the job looks and feels daily. You then can ask them deeper questions, for example around their work ethic, ability to work to deadlines, confidence communicating with external parties or having a purpose to what they do. Understanding joint values will determine longevity and commitment.
- Psychometric assessments help to delve deeper than CV’s alone, giving you reassurance of who you are potentially recruiting. Talent Dynamics is what Gotcha uses here.
