Our clients come back to us time and again because of the way we do things.
They also tell us how other recruitment companies do things. The stories they tell us make us mad – they give our industry a bad name and put businesses off our services. So, to set the record straight, here is a list of what your recruitment company SHOULD do for you. If they don’t – run for the hills.
1. They should get to know your business
Finding the right candidate without knowing your business is a bit like shopping for ingredients without knowing the recipe. They’ll never get it right because they don’t understand the underlying need for the kind of person required. They won’t be able to make intelligent choices for the shortlist if they don’t know where you aim to be in the future.
2. They should profile your team
Teams only work together productively if everyone is a good fit with everyone else. Your recruitment company needs to profile existing members of your company to make sure that the new recruit doesn’t upset the fine balance of your team and wreck your productivity.
3. They should vet candidates before sending you CVs
This is a real bugbear of ours, because it causes businesses to lose faith in the value of good recruitment companies. It’s the job whoever is doing your recruitment to have direct contact with the people they are recommending. If they are merely forwarding CVs they’ve got from a posting on the internet, then they’re not adding value – you could do that yourself.
4. They should offer advice and support in interviewing
Recruitment professionals are experts in interviewing techniques and personality profiling. You’ll want to interview your shortlist yourself, but your recruitment company can help you devise the right kinds of questions. They should also be able to point you in the right direction of good personality testing.
5. They should guarantee the placement
Business processes work best if everyone has something to lose or gain from a process. Recruitment is no different. Your chosen recruitment company should have faith in its own processes and be able to back them with guarantees that will cost them money if they fail to deliver. Beware the intangible guarantee!
A poor recruitment company will not add value to your recruitment process. In fact, you could end up out of pocket and have no comeback when your new person leaves after two weeks. Don’t make that mistake – vet a company properly before signing anything.
