If it seems like there’s a lot to recruitment, that’s because there is. Hire right with our handy guide.
Here’s our top ten list of recruitment essentials: from searching for a candidate to making sure their first few weeks go well.
Got a pen? Let’s go:
1. What skills will your company need in the future?
It’s tempting to recruit just to plug the gap. Don’t. Think strategically about the position and how the person with the right skills can help your company to move forward, not just perform better today.
2. What kind of person will fit with your team?
Or, what kind of personality are you looking for? Remember that ‘people’ issues are the reason why problems occur with new employees.
3. Are you asking the right interview questions?
You won’t actually get the best out of someone by making them feel horribly uncomfortable. But you do need to dig deep to eek out their values and how they’re likely to react to certain situations.
4. Have you used psychometric testing?
A reputable, repeatable psychometric test can assess traits such as values, emotional intelligence and situational judgement. And you need to be recruiting on these traits.
5. Have you been upfront about salary?
You’ll save yourself a lot of time if you state a salary range in the job description. It’s not as if you’re hoping to get away with not paying them, right?
6. Where will they sit?
And have you ordered their computer, or their desk? First impressions count and make sure you at least look like you’re ready for their first day.
7. Have you checked their qualifications?
We don’t need to tell you that you need to recruit people with the right qualifications, but we are stunned by how few employers ask for evidence. And while we’re on the subject…
8. Have you checked they’re eligible to work?
Just check a passport or driving licence. If they need to be a member of a professional qualifying body, have you checked their membership? And if they’re working with vulnerable people or children, have you done the right background checks?
And once they’ve started…
9. Have you asked for feedback?
Any teething problems can often be sorted out quickly and painlessly if you give your new employee a chance to tell you, openly, how they are getting on. It’s also good practice to get feedback from the rest of the team as well.
10. Have you told them how great they are?
You’re happy with their work, they’re a great fit with rest of the team and all’s going well. Tell them – people stay when they feel valued.
