The Gotcha New Employee Checklist
You’ve finally found the perfect person for your role. You and your team are counting the days until there’s another person around to help take the pressure off. Only – on their first day they’ve nowhere to sit and can’t work because you’ve forgotten to order their computer. Not quite the start of a beautiful relationship…
First impressions count, and you’ll want to make sure your new recruit settles in as quickly as possible. To save you time, and embarrassment, here’s our definitive list of what you need to do to make sure you look like you’re ready for your new recruit. (Because you are ready, right?).
Before they start
The following needs to be in place before they start. Believe us, it’ll look bad if you don’t have all this sorted.
They need a workstation. This may include all or some of the following:
- Desk
- Chair
- Desktop computer
- Laptop
- Office phone
- Mobile phone
They need to be able to work. For example, they’ll need:
-
Login details for their computer / intranet / email
- Email setup with address
- Phone connected with number
-
Business cards
They need to feel welcome and be part of the team. This can happen by:
-
Remind the rest of the team they are starting
- Schedule their training
- Choose someone to be their ‘buddy’ for when they start
- Decide what they’ll be working on
On their first day
Above all, make them feel welcome and needed. Nothing’s worse than starting a new job with nothing to actually work on. Make sure the following happens on their first day:
- Meet the team.
- Go over company policies, such as dress code and working hours.
- Ensure they know who to ask when they have questions.
-
Discuss their roles and responsibilities.
-
A full tour of the building.
-
Tell them the tea-break protocol and what happens at lunchtime.
- Give them something productive to do that meets their expectations of the role.
One Week In
-
Set up a meeting for them to ask questions.
-
Check their progress with the rest of the team.
-
If anything’s not quite going to plan – tell them now.
