6 Tips For People Who Want To Hire The Right Person First Time.
1. Check Their Social Media
Check a potential applicant’s social media accounts. A CV represents the applicant’s effort to present themselves in the best possible light. But their social media will show you how they conduct themselves, what they do in their spare time, how they interact with others and their general attitude to life.
2. Give Them A Chance
One single meeting is often not enough to see if someone is the perfect fit for your organisation. The candidate will be nervous and you’ll be tired after a long day interviewing multiple candidates. Finding the right person could mean seeing candidates twice or even three times, and as you get a more rounded view it’s worth the time.
3. Don’t Just Ask The Obvious
Of course you’ll want to ask them all about their work history, skills and strengths. But skills aren’t everything. You need to work out if this person’s going to fit in with your team and your company culture. Ask them questions about what makes them tick. To get you started, John Schwarz, CEO and founder of workforce analytics company Visier suggested the following:
- Who are you going to be 10 years from today?
- What makes you get up in the morning and do what you do?
- Why do you work?
These kinds of questions can help you understand how a person works, how they’ll fit in your team and more about their ambition and what drives them.
4. Ask About Their Personal Life
Nobody can successfully lead a double life. A couch potato is not going to turn in to a human dynamo for eight hours a day, however good their intentions. So find out what they get excited about outside of work – you’ll gain some useful insights.
5. Be Open And Honest
After all, you expect them to be! During an interview you expect the candidate to be open and honest about their questions, skills and motives. So, it’s only right you do the same. If you’re honest about office life, morale and day-to-day activities, you may find that something you don’t find special is something very appealing to your candidates – like weekly fruit baskets, filtered water on tap or staff away-days.
6. Finish With A Clear Promise
Once a job interview is done, both sides should have a clearer picture of how the relationship could work. It’s important to give a potential candidate a clear deadline for when they’ll have your answer. If they’re as good as you think they are, chances are they’ll be snatched up quickly. So, don’t waste time and keep them in the loop.
Hiring needs to be done right, first time. With these simple tips you’ll get a better understanding of who a potential candidate really is and how suited to the job they are.
