Sometimes recruitment is a pain in the neck. It’s something you have to do in addition to your normal job. You need to have a totally different skill set to your normal one to do it right. You have to follow up with candidates or risk losing them. And if you get it wrong it could damage your business.
But, recruitment is seen as one of the most rewarding jobs of all time. And we agree. Placing the right person in the right job can take a company to new heights and give someone the opportunity in their life that they were looking for.
But, we get that for many people, recruitment is just another thing on their to do list that they have to get done. So, with that in mind, we’d like to introduce…
- Make sure you say what you mean in the job spec. Re-read your spec through the eyes of someone who’s not familiar with your company to see if you’ve got the message across.
- Put aside time to recruit and set it in stone. Even if you desperately need to fill a vacancy, recruitment doesn’t sit in that ‘firefighting’ element of your business that takes a lot of your attention. It’s easy to say, but difficult to do: make time for recruitment.
- Include interview techniques and targeted questions that focus on values and personality, not just skills and qualifications. We’ve discussed the importance of this in this post.
- Follow up with candidates when you say you will. If you’ve found ‘the one’, don’t lose them to another company by not getting back to them. Remember, nothing is certain until contracts are signed.
- Be ready for when they start. A desk, chair, computer and telephone access should be ready for the minute they walk in the door on their first day. They may be on probation, but so are you.
The easier you can make the process for yourself the better. The less stressful the whole process will be and you’ll be in a better state of mind to make good decisions.
